All over the map

This weekend I presented two Romance Workshops. They were as different as they could possibly be. The first was an intimate group of seven friends, of which I am a part outside of my business. The second was a marvelously interactive, fun, big mixed group of lesbians, married couples and single straight girls. The atmospheres were completely different, and each was perfectly wonderful in its own way.

The small

In general my policy has been not to do Romance parties for my friends here in Portland. (Traveling is different, because if I work it makes it easier to visit.) Let’s just say I changed my mind and simply said yes when one of my long-term friends who had NEVER been to one of my parties called and asked to host one. I figured that even if no one bought, (and I was pretty sure no one would), or few even showed, it would be a fun, relaxing Friday night out with MY girls. Given that I very rarely get to have a night out with them, whatever happened, I knew it would be worth it.

SO, so, so beyond my expectations! I got there early because there was a mix-up on the invitation. (My fault entirely.) I set-up, helped make dinner, drank preparatory wine and dished. Just one of the girls.

Then I did my thing.

A conversation about sex, the concerns, the excitement and the issues along with all the education I do is completely different when I know the women so intimately. I know most of these women’s partners, children and have seen them in good times and bad. Plus we’re all facing the body issues of women in our 40’s. Some of us, LATE 40’s. (Have I mentioned I started my 5th decade last month? Old Lady, as my Ranch Boy constantly reminds me! *grin)

We’re not young, nubile and tight anymore. We’re also mostly not afraid of sex, intimacy or asking for what we want, or need, anymore. We have mostly come to terms with the way we look and feel. We may not always be sexy to others aside from our partners, but we are confident in our own sexuality. We are committed to keeping the intimacy in our relationships alive no matter the adjustments and concessions we might need to make as we age. Honestly, we are free.

Liberated, Feminists, in a real sense of the word. As loaded as those words have become, I realized Friday that helping women uncover their internal liberated feminist is really the gist of what I do. It made me happy. As did the Sauna and the Hot Tub after I was done talking and my friends were done shopping. Yes, they shopped. A lot. Thanks!

The big

My hostess called me a couple of days before the party a little panicked. She was worried they were ALL going to come. I have always coached my hostesses that in general only a third of the guests invited usually attend, so she and her partner had invited 35 people. 28 of them had responded with an enthusiastic YES! In the middle of making calls to confirm, my hostesses decided they better stop calling. Personally, this is a problem I can live with! *grin

The night was really fun. One of the main things I worry about with such a mixed crowd is that the guys will act out. Or that I’ll lose the room and chaos will ensue. Or that some of the crowd will feel I didn’t cover enough of the products that were for their particular needs. None of this happened.

We had a few people standing in the back, and in the kitchen, not for lack of seats but because they didn’t want to get too close. (People, I don’t bite, really! and neither do my toys…) And of course, they were loud, but a fun loud, a party loud. Not the disrespectful kind, the having a good time kind. Perfect!

Everyone had fun, even the guy who had been psyching himself up the whole day and fortifying himself with beer. He even came out of the kitchen and participated at the end.

What I love about a crowd like this is they are open to talking about sex from so many different angles. When you have gay and straight, men and women, coupled and single all together, it allows for so much more of an open conversation. I love it when I can pull out a strap-on harness, 3 dildos of different sizes and a masturbation sleeve so that everyone is exposed to each other’s possibilities. That is what inclusiveness and tolerance and openness are really about.

Repeat Hostesses

My hostesses have so much fun at their parties that some of them have me come entertain their friends once a year. Our relationship deepens from ‘work’ oriented to one of real friendship. I look forward to these particular parties more than most because they’re easy (afterall, we’ve been through the routine before) and I get to reconnect with women who already know and appreciate me.

Brenda T.

Last week, I presented a Passion Workshop at one of my all time favorite hostess’s house. This was her third party in as many years. As usual, she emailed me out of the blue, asking for a date and before I could even remind her of the next steps, had sent out an Evite and invited a big group of her friends.

That morning I really wasn’t feeling very well. Tired, cranky and if anyone else had been the scheduled host, I would have seriously considered having one of the Naughty Nymphettes go in my place. But it was Brenda, and there was NO way I was going to miss it. I knew we were going to have fun.

Coziness.

I arrived half an hour before our scheduled start time to set up. From the moment Brenda opened the door, it was a love fest. We caught up on her life: work, kid, relationship. Her used-to-be-caterer neighbor was there whipping up the most amazing food. I felt so at home and completely comfortable. Just what the Dr. ordered.

Her friends started arriving. Except for a couple of recognizable faces, the room filled with women I hadn’t met before. And a couple of them were Pleasure Party virgins! (I LOVE my virgins!) Perfect.

The Presentation.

Being the Spicy Princess means being ‘ON.’ Truthfully, just like with any job, there are times when I do a better job than others. When I’m really great it’s because the guests and I just click. It’s similar to the feeling you get when you meet someone and know instantly that you are going to be friends. It’s not rational, it just is. Sometimes I connect to a room full of women that way. And then my presentation is great.

This was one of those nights. We laughed together. We shared together. They made me blush, which is pretty hard to do. And when it was time for them to order privately, they trusted me enough to ask some pretty tough questions. By the time I went home, I was no longer tired, and I felt great.

In the next couple of months I have four parties in my calendar with past hostesses. Just like Brenda’s, I am looking forward to partying with some old friends and making new ones.

And I’m already anticipating next year’s Brenda party!

A True Smorgasbord

When I do five Pleasure Parties in one week, it all seems to blend in together. After all, as I tend to over mention, my memory is not what it once was. Maybe it never was. (Part of getting older is having permission to rewrite your own story, don’t you think?)

This week was definitely a cornucopia of diversity. Not only in terms of my Hostesses/Hosts and guests, but also in the tenor of my presentation. The basic content of my spiel doesn’t change much, but where I focus can.

Sometimes its obvious that the guests want as much education as I can give them. I think about this as a Pleasure Workshop because it’s really all about the biological and physicality of our bodies.“How do we work?”

Other times, it’s all about fun and feeling good, and how to make that better. These are Romance or Passion Parties because they are a celebration of pleasure, and a recognition that we deserve to indulge ourselves and search for bliss.

Then there are those that are indefinable. My presence is only a catalyst to someone else’s behavior. Perhaps a guest who is so uncomfortable that disrupting the party is the only way to deal with their feelings. Or, a party that becomes a litany of “gross, why would anyone do that…” or one person’s need to share every sexual experience ever had. (TMI people!)

This week, there was a little of everything, and as usual, there were some highlights. Grin.

The Mavens

Most of my customers fall between the ages of 25 to 50. Occasionally I am in front of women in their late 50’s and 60’s, and my oldest customer was 78. (She’s my cousin, so I’m not telling you that story, since some of her immediate family read this blog.) I call these women Mavens.

I usually love this older age group because A. they just can’t believe that I’m actually standing in front of them talking about clitorises and anal sex, and B. they are so damn appreciative of the information. (I love being wanted, don’t you?) Watching their faces light up with the understanding that they have power over their own sexual experience is one of the things that makes my job so wonderful.

From time to time though, one of these Mavens just simply cannot digest what she is hearing and just shuts down. She’ll try to make derogatory comments, or brush it off, or even just get up and leave.

This week, the Mavens were fun and amazed and just a little overwhelmed at what definitely turned into a Pleasure Workshop.

The Groupies

Oh, I love them! They make me feel like a Rock Star! Two of my parties this week were filled with my groupies. Most are women, some are their partners. They have been to two, three, sometimes even five or six of my parties. They host, they introduce me to their friends, we become friends. They make the afternoon or evening fly by, it’s like going out with the girls. Thanks, ladies!

The Place

Every year my team of Naughty Nymphettes and I host a Bar Affair for all the people we meet who want to attend, but not host, a party. We find a venue that has a private room and invite tons of people. Our guests graciously buy food and drink from the proprietor, and we in turn give away mega amounts of prizes. This time we raffled off almost $1500 worth of products we had accumulated throughout the year.

I want to give a shout out to Yetti’s, the wonderful Wine (and liquor and beer) Bar and Restaurant in North Portland. At 1914 N Killingsworth St. They don’t have a website yet, but when it’s up, I’ll add it. In the meantime, go visit.

Review from Yelp

They have a broad selection of wine for both in-house consumption and for purchase, a substantial and fun selection of beer, and a great little menu with excellent prices (the aforementioned hot french mini with garlic butter is $2). The food is the main reason we go. Small, constantly changing menu. Nothing fancy, but lovely flavors.

In the summer months, they have a attractive backyard with outdoor seating. Last we went, they had just gotten their liquor license, so they offer cocktails now too. ~Alexis T.

Just go. Yetta is wonderful, her staff is incredibly accommodating and it’s the perfect place for an after work or after dinner relaxed drink and a tasty bite.

The Shoes

If you’ve been following me on Facebook or Twitter you know I did a party for a bunch of gay guys this past weekend. Suffice it to say, it was hilarious! Thank goodness I use my Orgasmic Balls to strengthen my kegel muscles.

The guests ended up being a mix of gay and straight, men and women. This beautiful woman comes in with a pair of gorgeous shoes. Black, 4 1/2 inch heels, bows at the ankles. Talk about shoe envy!

I start gushing about the shoes. And my darling host? “Oh Honey, I have a pair just like that!” He disappears into the coat closet. (Really, like totally in there, rummaging around) And out he comes, in size 13 beeeautiful black pumps and struts through the living room with ATTITUDE, Baby! And that was before the party had even started.

What a night!

On the move

People often ask how far I’ll travel to do a party. There are really two different answers to that.

When I’m home, in Portland, I usually won’t drive over an hour, unless it’s a particularly wonderful hostess with LOTS of friends. And even then, I have to be bribed or cajoled or plead with. (Gotta make a living, you know!) It’s a good thing I have a team of Naughty Nymphettes throughout Oregon to bring Pleasure Parties to everyone else.

The beauty of my business though, is that I don’t have to stay home. I travel to PA, MD, DC, NY, CA (North, Central and this year SoCal) to do parties. These parties are different than the ones I do at home, because they are almost all hosted and attended by longtime friends and family as a way of luring me to visit. Like when I went to NY.

Talking about sex in a roomful of women with whom I am connected to by blood or deep friendship takes a little more emotional preparedness than when my hostess and the guests are new people in my life. I’ll admit, with my longtime friends and family it can be embarrassing. For them and for me. But while it might be a little harder, it’s always more rewarding.

The scene

This week’s party was in Oakland. I usually don’t travel for just one party, but it just worked out that way. My hostess (and her husband) are part of Ranch Boy’s long term crowd(I mean REALLY long term, cause he’s old *grin) as were two of the other eight guests. These are women who love me because Ranch Boy does and like me cause I’m me, Dana. They also love that I’m The Spicy Princess.

Have you ever tried to say “clitoris”, “anal plug” or “masturbation sleeve” in front of your sister’s friends or her husband without blushing? That’s what this is like. I admit it. I can’t. I was the color of my pink hair inside, and sometimes even on my cheeks. Thank god they love me. I may have stumbled over my words a little, but they got all the answers to their questions, and had a great time.

Common thread

Libido. Or the lack of it. That’s pretty much all anyone wanted to talk about. Either theirs, or their partner’s. Actually, this is pretty much THE topic of conversation all around me lately. In emails, twitter, conversations. The reasons vary, the frustration is all the same.

“Loss of libido in women, or low sexual desire, is the most common sexual problem for women and the main reason they seek sex therapy,” says Patricia Koch, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biobehavioral Health; Women’s Studies at Pennsylvania State University and Adjunct Professor of Human Sexuality at Widener University. “It affects anywhere from 33% to 67% of women, depending on how sexual desire is defined and reported,” according to Koch, whose research specializes in loss of libido in women. ~ webmd.com

Party Stories: The New York edition

New York, New York!

Home. That’s how I think of New York City, even though I’m a committed Portlander. or is that Portlandian? Went for family, for fun and to introduce a dear friend to my hometown. And I never travel without a scheduled Pleasure Party or TEAM meeting because why waste money when I can deduct it?

The Party

This one was a little hard. And close to home, because I am related to the hostess. She is one of my absolutely favorite cousins (and I have a LOT). She has been having a hard time. Let’s leave it at that, except to say any average human being would have canceled the party. I would have still come. I would have still stayed the night and hugged her. But if it had been me, I would have said – “forget it!”

Her Friends

Oh, wonderful, loving friends. There both for their enjoyment and their needs (let’s not forget needs!), but mostly it was a love fest. A let’s-laugh-drink-wine-and-forget-for-just-a-moment love fest. Exactly what the Dr. ordered. A room full of party virgins, ready and willing to laugh, listen and ask. At one point, my cousin marveled that for the first time in weeks, she was simply sitting, relaxing, not doing anything. Except being loved. That’s what a pleasure party should really be about!

And then, we stayed up till 2am. Just me and her, talking, hugging, being together. Talking about the good stuff and the hard stuff, and the possibilities for the future. And I too felt loved. It was one of the highlights of the week. And one of the rawest. Sometimes they just go together.

The Grrr!

I’m a faller. I’ve been tripping and falling since I was a little tyke. The kind of falling where my Dad and I would be crossing Park Avenue and the next thing you know I’d be flat on the ground. No warning. No drinking, just klutziness. It comes and goes, but it ALWAYS comes back. And so, I fell. Not once. Not even twice. But three times in 2 days. KLUTZ!! So my ankles are purple, and look like old lady sausage ankles. Didn’t stop me from walking from South Ferry to St. Marks Place. But, I’m done. It hurts. No More Falling.

Party Stories: Men, Rejection and Satisfaction

Six Pleasure Parties in five days generates a lot of interesting tidbits. A couple of wild guests, a few gay guys who always are the life of the party, lot’s of wine. A good time was had by all.

When there are so many in one week, its easy to notice trends. Certain questions that get repeated at every party, attitudinal themes.

Biggest Concern

Most women these days come to my parties with a blank check and encouragement from their partners to buy some fun sex toys for both of them. The women without partners, while occasionally shy, come to expand their horizons and often have a great time.

And then there is the other side. Women whose partners are upset or angry that they would even consider purchasing a sexual aid because it feels to them like a direct insult. These men have very strong beliefs about what constitutes good sex and how to be a good lover. When their women come to a “Sex Toy Party” they take as a rejection of them personally, or that they are lacking prowess under the sheets.

Most of the time, nothing could be farther from the truth.

It’s an unfortunate myth that it is possible for women to have orgasms through penetration. The fact is only about 24% of women can. But 65% of men believe that 100% of women can, if sex is done right. That puts a lot of pressure on couples in the bedroom, and forces a lot of faked orgasms.

This concern came up at every single party I did this past week.

Woman #1

They arrived late to a couple’s party. We had already started so they grabbed drinks and sat in the back, where I could see them but the rest of the guests couldn’t. Usually at my couples parties, the men are invited ONLY if they want to be there. No one is supposed to be coerced into coming. After all, if you don’t want to be here having fun, we don’t want you. Clearly, some signals had been crossed.

This guy definitely had better places to be. As each new lotion came up, he rolled his eyes. When I start talking battery-operated, I always make sure to say they are great to assure mutual timely satisfaction. This guy said under his breath loud enough for everyone to hear, “Yeah, right!”

She kept trying to show him stuff, kept repeating how the toys were for increasing the fun both of them, but he was not swayed. I kept expecting them to walk out half way through. At the end, during goodbyes, he wouldn’t even look at me.

I feel for this woman. She clearly is looking for their sex to be more satisfying, but he can’t hear her. In the end, she will just go along, and sublimate her own needs, or leave him. Neither of which seems like the choice he would prefer. Sad.

Woman #2

More than anything, she wants to make sure her sexual relationship with her husband stays satisfying. She’s been through intense surgery and has limited mobility, flexibility and battles pain. Not one ounce of self pity, in fact the opposite. Life is good, there is simply some healing to get done.

The problem? Her husband sees all Romance enhancements as rejection of him. He’s sure that her desire to add “extras” to their bedroom is really about his inadequacies as a lover. She explains that he is very conservative and quite shy about bedroom activities.He was very nervous and upset about her coming to the party.

She’s looking for a way to make sure that during this physically challenging time (recovering from surgery) the sexual side of their new (1 year) marriage doesn’t deteriorate. She was ALL about his needs and satisfaction.

She was SO brave. She came in to talk, made it clear from the outset that she wasn’t ready to buy but really needed some advice. How to talk to him without pushing his buttons. how to get him to see this was about wanting him, not replacing him. We had a great conversation and talked about getting a few toys that are clearly meant to be used as a couple, about broaching the subject gently, about the power of keeping the toys only for us time.

She left with a smile and a strategy for mutual pleasure. I know she’ll be back and they’ll try something. Sometimes, I really love my job.

Party Stories: Naked Garden Slaves

The Week

It was a slow, lazy weekend. Lots of turkey and tryptophan. No parties. How about my Naked Garden Slave story?

Naked Garden Slave

His name is Roger. It was the first offer I got when I still believed that advertising in the local paper was the way to go.

The paper was the WW. A standard alternative weekly loosely based on the format of the Village Voice. Funny Back Page ads, pages of escorts with a quirky readership. What I thought was a perfect fit.

I can’t remember the exact wording of the ad anymore. It was about 4 years ago. Something simple, inviting people to host For Your Pleasure parties or to come be on my team of Naughty Nymphettes.

Voicemail:

(Very nasally male voice with a slight drawl)

” Hi, this is Roger. I read your ad and I wanted to offer my services. I’d like to come help you out at your parties, you know… serving drinks, demoing your products. I’d be happy to come just wearing a bow tie. If not that, I’d like to be your Naked Garden Slave.”

Can you imagine my surprise? I had never heard of a Naked Garden slave as a job description before, but believe you me, I was ready to sign up! I could see it in action. A buff naked guy hauling compost, pulling weeds, picking luscious veggies. Seriously, suddenly it was clear – I needed a Naked Garden Slave. Every Spicy Princess’s dream, right?

But Roger? Ew!

Sorry Roger!

Nope, I am a lucky girl. I have a Ranch Boy (he really grew up on a ranch), who doubles as a garden slave, and happily gets naked, only not outside, and just for me. Yep, MY Naked Garden Slave.

Poor Roger. I hope he found what he was looking for.

I don’t advertise anymore. One Roger was enough.

Cool Stuff

Pure Instinct

This was SO cool! A past hostess, who is also a nurse, explained that studies have recently shown that pheromones are an anti-depressant! One of my most sought after products is a pheromone perfume called Pure Instinct, which boosts levels of your natural pheromones. Like a loudspeaker for your hormones.

I knew wearing it puts you in a better mood and alters others responses to you , but I didn’t actually know it was an anti-depressant! How great to hear it confirmed by science. I LOVE my hostesses and my guests!

Cool Customer

It’s rare to have a male guest come in and order for himself at a party. Especially when he isn’t attached to a partner. Especially one who doesn’t have anything to prove.

This guy was great! He came into my confidentiality room, asked thoughful questions regarding use, care, cleaning and travel (he’s on his way to Iraq).
